Marek Hamsik, a former Napoli midfielder and current Turkish Trabzonspor player, announced on Monday that he would be leaving the Slovak national team, whose shirt he has defended for 15 years, of which he has been captain and top scorer.
“It wasn’t an easy decision, I’ve been pondering for a long time, but I have decided to end this important and wonderful period of my career as a footballer,” the one who became the epitome of Naples spoke via Facebook.
Hamsik, 34, scored 26 goals in 135 appearances for Slovakia. He is its captain, the player with the most internationality and highest scorer in history.
“It has been a long and beautiful journey, of which I am proud,” added Hamsik, who led Slovakia to round 16 of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and the 2016 European Championship in France.
