The team led by Nico Rosberg dominated the ninth round of the Extreme-E off-road electric vehicle world championship this Saturdayheld at Minera Centinela, a former open-air copper mine located in the Antofagasta region, in northern Chile.
It was the third victory of the season for Rosberg X Racing (RXR) and the first at the Antofagasta Minerals Copper X Prix, which served to overtake Acciona El Sainz XE Team (ASXE) in the classificationled by Laia Sanz, who never had her day in the iron sands of the Atacama Desert.
Johan Kristoffersson and Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinksy now lead the championship by six points there is one day left, which will be held this Sunday.
“I just tried to keep it clean and keep Laia at the back, but it was a close race. Johan got off to a great start and it was a great team effort. It was really nice to take home the win. “We are pleased to lead the championship and looking forward to carry this momentum into the next race,” said Åhlin-Kottolinksy.
Johan Kristoffersson highlights his match against Mattias Ekström. “I really enjoyed that match. And watching Mikaela and Laia drive was really impressive. Tomorrow is a new day and we are now at the top of the championship, so it will be an exciting confrontation,” he said.
“The feeling was bitter after the Grand Final because the victory was so close. and we were unlucky in the pilot change because there was a sudden sandstorm. That’s where I lost first place,” explained Sanz.
“The good thing is that Mattias and I both knew we had the speed for more. We are very happy to be only six points away because in the morning everything seemed worse after our technical problem in the first qualifying. Tomorrow we will give everything. We must go with everything for success,” he added.
The podium this Saturday was completed by X44 Vida Carbon Racingalthough there are no title options.
The NEOM McLaren Extreme E finished in fourth place, with Tanner Foust and debutant Hedda Hosås, completing a day of consistent performances. Veloce Racing, for its part, had to drop out, and was unable to win the title.
