Hugo Bueno (Vigo, 2002) reached Wolverhampton Wanderers from Galician Areosa in 2019. It was a shocking call-up that changed the life of this full-back who was barely 16 years old at the time. As a teenager he moved to England and rose through the youth ranks of wolves until debut in October 2022 with the first team.
Since then he has established himself as a regular in the lineups and wolves They rewarded him a few days ago with a renewal until 2028. After overcoming a knee problem that kept him out for more than two months and after starting with a visit to Los de Gary O’Neil in Arsenal (2-1), Well talked to EFE to review his moment in England.
Two and a half months later he returned. Is it fun?
“Yes, yes, of course. Personally, I’m very happy that I can enjoy playing again after two and a half months, really. But hey, the game – against Arsenal – is a shame. Now we have a very important one on Tuesday and give it your all.”
The club believed in you, despite the injury, with a five-year renewal.
“The club has a lot of trust in me and that is something very, very nice and special. So that’s why I’m really happy; they gave me the opportunity to come here, as a kid, to debut and all thing. . So it’s like my home.”
You’ve been here for years, how is it in England in general?
“The truth is, I feel very good, very happy. It’s true that at first it was a bit difficult, but overall, throughout my stay here and what’s left, I’m very happy with everything.”
Do you miss Spain at all?
“Man, of course. Yes, there are moments when you miss Spain, your family, your friends. Whenever I can, I take advantage and go there for a few days, but hey, you can’t do it, a lot . less now in the winter, with so many games, but Yeah, you kind of missed it.”
How did you experience the turbulent summer? Especially with the departure of Julen (Lopetegui).
“The truth is something difficult for the team. We didn’t expect it, but hey, it’s football. We know that these things can happen and the truth is that the whole team has been very professional. The season is about to start and we are focused on us, to be ready and give everything on the field.
There were also problems with financial fair play.
“Yes, yes, of course, we know that things are happening at the club and so on. In fact, the club explained it in a letter to the fans, but all, all that, in general we didn’t do much focus. We prefer to train every day and improve and do our job, which is to play football.
How do you see yourself in a few years? Stay here, change leagues…
“It’s a difficult question because I don’t know what I’m going to do next month, but I’m very happy here now in the Premier League. It’s a very strong league, if not the strongest and who knows. Hey, me I want to continue here, but I’m also working for big things and who knows.”
His case is special, because he always plays here. He never tried the Spanish League, for example.
“As you already said, I came directly here. I didn’t try anything else and so I feel like if this is going well for me, it’s probably my thing. But I don’t know, who knows, maybe it’s going better . for me somewhere else, right? Right now I’m thinking about trying to succeed here, about being important and then in the future, we’ll see.”
