Manchester United had an impossible mission and the club stopped being a club for epic nights a long time ago. They lost the lowest against a Bayern Munich with nothing but honor at stake (0-1) and did not suffer at all against a team with obvious offensive deficiencies and that was completely left out of Europe.
The English team came into the game knowing that it was not up to itself. As if beating the Bavarian team wasn’t enough, they had to wait for Copenhagen and Galatasaray to tie to get into the second round, but that wasn’t to be. The Danes won and even a draw was not enough for them in the Europa League.
There is more at stake than that. In particular, the future of Ten Hag and this season. And the Dutchman, already discussed by a strong sector of the English press, may have put a noose around his neck. Exiting the Champions League by beating Bayern is not the same as finishing bottom of the group and at Old Trafford, even if he said goodbye to applause, they were demanding.
The fact is that the supposed difference between the two teams was noticeable from the start. Manchester United have no chance of winning. Without Rashford and Martial, who suspiciously missed training on Monday due to a flu condition, resources in attack and on the bench for the Ten Hag are laughable.
It is worth saying that, at least, United came out on the field well planted. Pressing well, alert to the pace of Sané and Coman, he controlled the attacks of a Bayern team at half-speed and was more imprecise than usual for most of the game, especially with Kimmich. In fact, it is a game of several chances. Neuer is almost another spectator and Onana doesn’t have much to do. He had to stop a tight shot from Kane in the first half and nothing else.
As time passed, the English began to lose morale as they saw that they had not come up with a way to tickle the Germans. Bruno Fernandes had a shot from the front that hit the roof and the rest is history. Desperation due to the lack of bite on the ball and few ideas led to a flat second half, emotionless and Coman killed after receiving from Kane and beating Onana in his face (71′).
He knows where Manchester United and Erik ten Hag come in. Now we have to wait to see if this is his death sentence or if the Dutchman has some life left.
