Date:

The businessman Juan Roigpresident of Mercadona, but also of the Trinidad Alfonso Foundation that organizes and sponsors the Valencia Marathon, This Sunday, he pledged one million euros for the athlete who broke the marathon world record in this event.

Roig made this announcement accompanied by Paco Borao, director of the Trinidad Alfonso Valencia Marathon, at the end of its 2023 edition where Sisay Lemma was the winner and broke the test record by completing it in 2:01:48. The time was just over a minute off the time set by Kelvin Kiptum in Chicago this year when he set a time of 2:00:35, which is the current record.

“We want to announce that when the world record is broken, We will give a million euros if he does it in Valencia. We will give half a million Paco (Borao) and another half million to whoever winsbecause one of our dreams is to break the record in Valencia,” laughed Roig.

In this edition, the organization offered 250,000 euros for anyone who has broken a world record, both in male and female categories.

The businessman is convinced that one day this record will be broken in this test, although he says he doesn’t know when that will happen. “But we will fight for this,” he assured.

Roig highlighted how the test was integrated in the city, in the Valencian Community and in Spain. “We want it to be the most important event in the city after Fallas and we are satisfied with it. There are no recommendations here, you see the culture of effort, here you challenge yourself and it’s good.”

Roig praised the vision of SD Correcaminos who promoted the test in the eighties and where he shares his organization and says that they are close to the test, with a budget of about 6.5 million, which is “one hundred percent sustainable.”
