The Venezuelan Yulimar Rojas, current triple jump champion and world record holder, is one of five candidates for the ‘Best Athlete of the Year’ award presented by World Athleticswhich does not include Spanish in that list Maria Perezdouble world champion of walking 20 and 35 kilometers.
Yulimar, four-time outdoor world champion, three-time indoor champion and gold medalist in Tokyo Olympics 2020, tops the list of finalists with the Kenyan Faith Kipyegongold in Budapest in the 1,500 and 5,000 meters and world record holder in the 1,500, mile and 5,000 meters.
The Ethiopian completed it Tigist Assefa, winner of the Berlin Marathon with a world record; the dutch Femke Bol, 400 hurdles and 4×400 world gold and indoor 400 world record holder; and the Jamaican Shericka Jacksonworld gold and silver in the 200 and 100 meters, respectively.
The Venezuelan athlete is only one of the five finalists who won this award before, in 2020, and seeks this year to match the Americans Marion Jones (1997 and 1998) and Sanya Richards-Ross (2006 and 2009) with two award . The most awarded is Russian pole vaulter Yelena Isinbayeva, who has won the award three times (2004, 2005, and 2008).
The selection of these finalists was determined among members of the World Athletics Council, the athletes themselves and fans through World Athletics’ social media platforms, where two million votes were registered.
The winners of the ‘Best Athlete of the Year’ award, both in the male and female categories, will be announced on December 11.
