The future of Formula 1 Spanish GP In recent months it has become something very similar to what we are used to the Real Madrid-Barcelona Classic in the world of football. Two cities want to be on the calendar from 2027, Barcelona with the Circuit, renewing its current contract, and Madrid, for its part, with a new route to Ifema-Valdebebas. Both present interesting projects to obtain the desired space that can remain once the contract that Gran Circo has with the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya until 2026 ends.
As MD said a few months ago, Madrid’s candidacy is more than established and things need to change significantly so that the Spanish capital does not have an urban GP in the streets of IFEMA. The capital coming from private funds plays a lot of favor here and it is no secret that Formula 1 is increasingly looking at having races in the center of the city, where organizing events and attracting VIPs is easier.
Asked about this at a promotional event for Estrella Galícia 0,0, Carlos Sainz was very clear about the respect: “My priority is to have a GP in Spain. As a Spanish driver, I have no preference between Madrid and Barcelona. My desire and true wish is for it to become an iconic event, an example for the rest of Europe and to set a trend like Mexico or Singapore. Obviously, as a native of Madrid I am pleased to compete here”he explained.
We will see what the outcome is because there are several cards on the table: that the GP will go to Madrid, that it will continue in Barcelona because it has been happening without stopping since 1991, that they will be alternate or both on the calendar. Although logically there are options with more numbers, what seems certain is that Spain will continue to be on the calendar. So Sainz can rest assured: his priorities seem to be on the right track.
