Lionel Messi will play against his childhood club, Newell’s Old Boys. The Argentina team has agreed to play a preseason friendly in Inter Miami on February 15. The MLS club, where the former Barça player arrived in July, announced on Monday that they will host Argentine Newell’s at their DRV PNK stadium on February 15. Newell’s Old Boys are based in Argentina city of Rosario, where Messi was born, grew up and started playing football, before joining FC Barcelona at the age of 13.
Inter coach Gerardo ‘Tata’ Martino is also from Rosario and played for the club three times before returning as coach from 2012 to 2013. “I am excited to welcome my beloved team, the Newell’s, to the home of Miami. “It will be a special match because of everything Newell’s Old Boys means to me,” said Martino. “It’s also a great opportunity to prepare for what promises to be an exciting season,” he added.
This match is the last in a busy preseason schedule for Miami, which will begin its preparations against the El Salvador team in San Salvador on January 19. The club will play two matches in Saudi Arabia, namely against Al Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo’s team, before traveling to Hong Kong and Tokyo.
