The Governing Board of the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) announced this Thursday two updates to the Ranking system. First, for fields with 80 players or fewer across all qualifying Circuits, a new points distribution curve will award a higher percentage of available points to the top finishers in those events. Additionally, with some exceptions, ranking points will be awarded to players who finish in the lowest 15% of the final ranking in these events without a cutoff. Additionally, in match play events, players who lose their first round match or lose all matches in a group will not receive ranking points.
Second, the Governing Board has also introduced a new multiple win benefit that provides a 60 percent bonus to players who win a second time within a 52-week period on any eligible circuit. Point bonuses are limited to a total of four points.
“Based on the extensive review following the changes implemented in August 2022, we have identified these two opportunities to further improve the OWGR and accurately evaluate the performances of participating players on all eligible Tours,” said President of the Official World Golf Ranking, Peter Dawson. “The adjustments to the Ranking were made after careful consideration, and we are confident that today’s updates will better position OWGR for the future,” he added.
The approved changes will take effect on January 1, 2024. OWGR will continue to monitor the operation of both mechanisms through 2024 and make any adjustments it deems necessary.
