The 32nd Regatta Cartagena-Ibiza ‘Estrella de Levante Trophy’ started this Thursday, around half past ten in the morning. The competition challenges twenty boats to sail the more than 240 miles that separate Cartagena from Sant Antoni de Portmany, in the north of the island of Ibiza.
The go-ahead was given at the Podadera point to take advantage of the soft milk that was blowing in Cartagena Bay, with the expectation that these winds will last at least as far as Cabo de Palos. Then the more than 125 participating sailors will have to deal with changing conditions and nighttime navigation, which makes it difficult to pass through the virtual beacons that the regatta committee has arranged on the route. Thus, the first boats are expected to reach the coast of Ibiza during the morning of Friday 27, in a navigation of more than twenty hours ending in the complicated entrance to the bay of San Antonio.
The participating boats come from different ports in the Murcia region, as well as from the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands, competing for a regatta counting towards the Spanish Altitude Championship (Mediterranean Zone).
The awards ceremony will take place on Saturday 28 at the Club Nàutic Sant Antoni (Ibiza), in a “village” set up by Estrella de Levante, the main sponsor of this emblematic regatta.
