The Ugandan athlete Benjamin Kiplagat was found dead in Kenya, local police said, and local media reports said he had been murdered.
Born in Kenya 34 years ago, Kiplagat represented Uganda on the international stage in the 3,000 meters steeplechase, at both three Olympic Games and six world championships. In London’2012 he was a semi-finalist in this event, but it was in his junior stage when he stood out, winning silver at the Junior World Cup in Poland in 2008.
His body was found in the driver’s seat of a car belonging to his brother on Saturday night on the road from his village of Kimunu to Eldoret in the Rift Valley, known for its high-performance centers for athletes.
Kiplagat’s body had wounds on the chest and a deep cut on the neck consistent with the fatal stabbing.
“An investigation has been opened and the police are looking for clues,” local police officer Stephen Okal told local media.
