The National Professional Football Association (ANFP) of Chile announced on Thursday the arrival of Argentinian Eduardo Berizzo as the new technical director of La Roja, a squad going through difficult moments after failing to qualify in Qatar.
In a public statement released this afternoon, Chilean soccer’s governing body reported that it had reached a “complete agreement” with the strategist and his technical staff, pending his official press presentation next that week.
It is, according to the president of the federation, Pablo Milad, of an “excellent expert” of Chilean football with “extensive national and international experience”.
“We wish him the best of luck in this new process, towards the qualifying rounds and the international commitments we have,” the leader added.
Berizzo has steps as a coach by Estudiantes de la Plata (Argentina), O’Higgins de Rancagua (Chile) -team where he won the title in 2013-, as well as Celta de Vigo, Seville and Athletic (Spain).
His last experience as technical director was as the leader of the Paraguayan national team, a team which he dismissed due to his negative results in the campaign towards the next World Cup, leaving the Guarani team located in eighth position in South America.
One of the biggest challenges of Chilean football today, after it was eliminated from the World Cup career, is to promote the process of change in the generation due to the decline of determinants such as Alexis Sánchez, Arturo Vidal, Gary Medel and Claudio Bravo.
These players, the leaders of the so -called ‘Golden Generation’, led the conquest of two consecutive editions of the Copa América, in 2015 and 2016.
La Roja closed out their South American qualifiers participation in seventh place with 19 points in 18 games, with nine losses, four draws and five wins.
Last April, former Chilean team coach Martín Lasarte he was removed by the local federation after failing to meet the objectives set at the beginning of the process.
