Portuguese Fernando Santos, former coach of his country and Poland, has become the new coach of Besiktas, the Turkish club reported this evening in a statement.
Fernando Santos, 69, arrived at the Istanbul club with a coaching staff consisting of Joao Carlos Viana Cunha Costa, Paulo José Ramos Mendes, Justino Fernando, Ricardo Miguel Candido de Sousa Santos and Jorge Manuel Caetano do Rosario.
After joining Benfica, he played as a professional player for Maritimo and Estoril, where he began his career as a coach. He then played for Estrela de Amadora, Porto, AEK Atenas, Panathinaikos, Sporting Lisbon, Benfica itself, PAOK Thessaloniki and the Greek national team.
He managed to guide Portugal to victory in the 2016 Euro Cup and the 2018/19 Nations League and after the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where they reached the quarterfinals and lost to Morocco, he left the post after eight years. He signed for Poland in January 2023 but poor results forced him to resign in September.
Besiktas is trying to get Santos back on track for the team, fifth in the Turkish League, 18 points behind leaders Fenerbahce and Galatasaray.
