The Catalunya Athletics Indoor Track, located in Sabadell, will be named after the athlete Carmen Valerowho died on January 2 and was the first Spanish athlete to participate in the Olympic Games, in Montreal 1976.
The municipal spokespersons of the Sabadell City Council agreed this Monday to the name change, with the approval of Valero’s family and is expected to be submitted for approval at the ordinary plenary session in February.
With this recognition, the city of Barcelona wishes to pay tribute to Valero (Castelserás, 1955) both for his sporting achievements, including two world cross country championships (1976 and 1977) and a bronze (1975), and for in his promotion of athletics and games.
Finished 25 times, the Spanish athlete wore the colors of Joventut Atlètica de Sabadell for most of his career and was champion of Catalonia and Spain on several occasions, both indoor and outdoor track and cross country on others’ t different distance of bottom and half depth.
Spanish record holder in 800, 1,500, 3,000 and 5,000 meters, after his retirement Valero is a director of the Spanish Athletics Federation and vice president of the Sabadell Swimming Club.
Recognized four times by the Higher Sports Council as the best Spanish athlete, in 2003 he received the Sports Medal from the Generalitat of Catalonia and the Spanish Association of Athletics Statisticians featured him as the best Spanish athlete of the twentieth century.
