In March, Spain will host an event in line with the circuit known as IBA’s Night of Championsdeveloped by International Boxing Association (IBA) and where the most famous names in Olympic boxing face each other, with rules close to professional boxing. The chosen date is March 23, in the city of Madridalthough the final venue remains final.
The agreement to make this possible was closed on the occasion of the last Ordinary Congress of the Olympic boxing regulatory body, held on December 9 at Dubai. Reclaiming the idea that appeared a few years ago and was called, at the time, AIBA Pro BoxingThe IBA Champions Night It aims to measure the best athletes, but in a more attractive format: more rounds, hard bandaging, different clothes and with important prize money for the participants.
In 2023, IBA launched various events in cities like Phuket (Thailand), Serpukhov and Moscow (Russia), Monte Carlo (Monaco), Antalya (Turkey), Paris (France), Astana (Kazakhstan) or Dubai (United Arab Emirates). The good progress of the project led to its expansion in the new year, reaching new countries, including Spain.
In the event that will be held in our country, different parts of the national team will see action, the choice of which will be made taking into account the calendar, since the date of the celebration is located between two qualifying tournaments for Games in Paris. Although, and after the date of the event to be held in January at Zagreb (Croatia), the conflict between Samuel Carmona and Hasanboy Dusmatov (Uzbekistan) where the so-called IBA World Championship, can join this event. However, for now this is only a possibility and we will have to wait for definitive confirmation to know if it will be part of the Spanish IBA’s Night of Champions.
Felipe Martínez, president of the Royal Spanish Boxing Federation, considers it important to get Spain to host this event: “It’s about continuous improvement and, in this case, that our athletes can be more active and at a high level. The main attraction of this format is that the best face is the best and that is very attractive for the fan. Gradually, more details will be revealed, both about the competitors and its final location, as well as, if applicable, the TV channel or platform where it will be followed in our country.”
