Yoshimi Yamashita This Saturday she became the first female referee in Asian Cup after directing the match in between Australia and India this Saturday, with a 2-0 victory for Australia. The Japanese referee was accompanied by two female assistants, his compatriots Makoto Bozono and Naomi Teshirogi, in the Group B match at the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium in Al Rayyan.
The Asian Football Confederation described it as a “historic event.” Yamashita, 37, who earned his FIFA referee badge in 2015, is Japan’s first professional referee and has officiated matches in his country’s top division, the AFC Cup and the Asian Champions League.
In addition, he is among the 36 referees for the World Cup in 2022, but he did not whistle in any game. Instead, he was the fourth referee in six matches in the tournament, also in Qatar. Yamashita, described as a “pioneer” by FIFA, also refereed two Women’s World Cups and the 2020 Summer Olympics.
