Laia Sanz kept the Top 15 despite problems in the eighth stage

The ofStara Team saw its performance conditioned as a result of an electronic failure that caused a power outage in the first half of the special, which now consists of 458 kilometers divided into three parts: the first of 165 timed kilometers, followed by a neutralized road section of 179 and a final section of 114 kilometers again timed. Fortunately, in that last part the problem disappeared and they regained positions.

“Today was a day to gain some more positions and get a good result on the stage, because we started in a good position and the type of terrain suited us, but as soon as we started we had an electrical problem .It was very difficult for us to pass the sand dunes in the first part of the route and we lost a lot of time there, about 15 minutes,” lamented the Astara Team driver.

After trying to fix the bug before the second section of the special, Laia Sanz and Maurizio Gerini They tried to find the source of the failure without success, but miraculously the engine of the Astara 02 Concept returned to normal operation: “We did not understand the reason, but, in the second part, the engine worked properly again. and was able to we’re racing. We think it’s a sensor. Hopefully we can do a clean lap tomorrow,” he concluded.


At the end of the day, Sanz and Gerini They are in 36th absolute place in the stage and third in T1.2 (4×2). In the absolute general standings they remain 15th and in their category they dropped one place to be placed third.

Once at camp, participants learn about news of the death of Carles Falcón, a motorcycle racer who had an accident in the second stage from which he never recovered. “I am very sorry for the death of Carles. We motorcycle riders know that when we go out on the track there is this danger, but we never thought that it could happen to us. This is very sad news. I am very sorry for his family and friends,” commented Laia Sanz.

Despite the bad news, the rally will continue this Tuesday and will reach the ninth stage, in between Ha’il and Al-Ula, with a special 436 kilometers and a link of 225.
