Michael Owen opens up: “My son is blind”

Date:

James Owen17-year-old son of Michael Owen (44), he went blind. This was revealed by the former Liverpool, Manchester United and Real Madrid striker (among others) in statements to the ‘Daily Mail’. “The worst is when they ask you if you like football,” said the former footballer, saying this has been happening for years.

“People look at you and ask ‘Aren’t you interested in football?’. Then you have to explain everything and end up in a conversation you don’t want to have with anyone. When someone approaches you in the pub and asking ‘Does your son play football?’ “You just want to change the subject. This is probably the hardest question I’ve had over the years.”

“At the age of eight, James Owen was diagnosed with Stargardt’s disease and during his teenage years his vision gradually deteriorated until he was blind. When he was younger and perhaps saw a little, the fields are smaller, everything is closer and I can see the ball more, so I’m very good,” explained Owen.

Now she and her son want to raise awareness about Stargardt’s disease and other eye diseases. “When I couldn’t play football I wanted to find something else. At first I didn’t want to but now I want to have my own business and support my future family. I used to be more sensitive about that. I let it define me,” said James Owen.
