Bayern Munich, thicker than ever, lived a real nightmare at the Allianz Arena, falling against a pragmatic Werder Bremen that defended its short lead as much as possible (0-1).
Things are clear from the beginning how they will work. This is not surprising either. Ole Werner’s team had no choice but to play close to their field and subscribe to the counterattack provided by the Bavarian superiority. This is why Njinmah, a very fast player, has emerged as a starter, a role he does not hold much.
The script couldn’t have been better for Werder Bremen, who found themselves in the company of a rival who was stuck and had few ideas. Bayern started with a very clear lead through Sané, but from that moment it was almost all downhill. Ball circulation was tight and Harry Kane was hardly to be found between the lines, which is always bad news.
Meanwhile, Bremen does damage in space. De Ligt, not one of Tuchel’s favourites, left some dangerous spaces behind him which they took advantage of. Njinmah scored after a positional error by Upamecano as well, but he did not get on the scoreboard due to the earlier foul on Musiala after consulting the VAR.
The first half ended with a better feeling for Werner’s team. Even Neuer had to make a save to avoid surprise, something that came in the 59th minute, when after a good cut Weiser took a missile that sailed over the Bayern captain’s head.
Tuchel, not satisfied, took a bench shot and even changed the system. He switched to a three-man defense and added an area presence on the field with Müller, Tell and Goretzka, leaving Coman and Sané in the lanes, although the latter was not too pleased with the decision.
As is clear, he began to dominate Bayern and close Bremen in their field, also due to fatigue. But that approach also did not help to return. Lots of ball in the area, lots of wing play, but Jung, Friedl and Stark won the arguments. And in the only one they didn’t, Tell’s header was met by a fine save by Zetter with the help of the woodwork. The French winger, in fact, was the best and there were two others who almost escaped. Bayern and Leverkusen, the leader, lost.
