Braga beat Sporting on Tuesday with a goal from Spaniard Abel Ruiz (1-0) and qualified for the Portuguese League Cup final, where they will face the winner of Wednesday’s match between Benfica and Estoril on Saturday.
Sporting dominated most of the game and had the best chances (three balls hit the woodwork), but the header from Abel Ruiz, formed in FC Barcelona, Ruben Amorim and opened the door to the final for Braga.
Surprise in Leiría
All matches of this Final Four of the Portuguese League Cup were played at the stadium Dr. Magalhães Pessoa de Leiría and in this first semifinal the surprise came as Sporting, champion of the tournament in 2021 and 2022, is the leader of the Primeira Liga, while Braga occupies fifth place.
Francisco Trincao (former Barça) played the whole match but completed a routine performance and could not prevent the ‘lions’ elimination.
Estoril-Benfica, on Wednesday
Estoril, despite knocking out reigning champions Porto in the group stage, will not start as favorites this Wednesday in their semifinal against Benfica.
