Poland’s Iga Swiatek and Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka continue to top the world rankings of women’s tennis after the Australian Open, the first ‘grand slam’ of the year.
Despite winning for the second consecutive year in Melbourne, Sabalenka (8,905) could not lead from Pole (9,770)shocked Czech Linda Noskova in the third round.
The Americans Coco Gauff, who reached the quarterfinals, and Jessica Pegula rose to third and fourth placerespectively, by surpassing the Kazakh Elena Rybakina, while the Chinese Qinwen Zheng, finalist at the Open, entered the ‘top 10’ and sat in seventh place.
As for the Spanish, Paula Badosa rose 17 places and is now 83rd in the world and Rebeka Masarova advanced by five, at 86. At the top are Sara Sorribes (55) and Cristina Bucsa (73).
