Soccer is a sport of results and sensations. Teams go through better and worse streaks that usually come down to determining whether or not they reach their set goals. In Athletic’s particular case, they have been going through a sweet moment for some time now that is bringing them closer to the goals set at the start of the season. However, like any process, red and white are not linear and within logic.
The ‘stumble’ against Cádiz last weekend (when I write these lines I do not know the result of last night against Mallorca), as a result of the destruction of the cup-winner against Barça, the players, who have been can only take one point from Bagong Mirandilla. A result in which we should not put our hands on our heads as long as it remains only, a puncture, and as long as Valverde’s men are able to continue the good dynamics to which we are accustomed.
Things, at the moment, are going according to plan, but when a bump in the road appears, it is inevitable to remember the previous seasons when Athletic had a flat tire in the middle of the season and arrived tired at the end of the campaign without achieving its goals. A few years have passed where the illusions disappeared in an instant and, in order not to fall for the same thing again, it is better to be safe than sorry. Although it is true that the sensations this year are very different from previous seasons, especially considering the recent Cup matches, it is not advisable to lose sight of the League.
This season the team is competing at a very high level in the regular competition. A small decrease in the last appointments, at the expense of what happened last night in San Mamés, which should serve to gain strength and leave again.
To do this and considering, in the short term, the demanding cup duels that await the team against Atlético de Madrid, it is advisable to distribute the efforts and not overload the players, although always keeping the objectives clear and without neglecting either of the two competitions.. A difficult balance to achieve and a situation in which Valverde has a complex role.
The coach, however, has several quality replacements who have proven willing to accept ownership. Since the coach is the one who lives with the players every day and ultimately makes the decisions, I personally believe that it is advisable to dose the efforts and rotate in some games as it happened in Cádiz, to keep the squad is fresh and hence this one is up to par. Cool mind, hot blood and keep working.
