Sebastian Haller this Wednesday gave the victory (1-0) against the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the host team, Ivory Coast, who will play in the final of the African Cup against Nigeria.
The Emerse Fae team claimed home team status and the title favorite against an opponent seeking its first final at this event like the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
For the Ivorian team, Sunday’s final will be their fifth. He won two, in 1992 and 2015, and was runner-up in several others (2006 and 2012).
The Congolese team held their own until game time. The winning goal came in the 65th minute, on a cross from the right by Max Gradel into the area that was collected by Sebastian Haller. The Dortmund attacker completed the action with a volley that flew past goalkeeper Loionel Mpasi-Nazu.
With the score in their favour, Ivory Coast maintained control despite their rivals’ desperate attempts to balance the match and claw back their chances.
The Ivorian team closed out the victory and reached the final to be played on Sunday against Nigeria, having previously beaten South Africa on penalties.
