Sam Burns make a 38-foot birdie putt from the green on first hole of the playoffs to beat number 1 in the world scottie scheffler and win at Challenge by Charles Schwab on Sunday in Fort Worth, Texas. Burns ’success was the third of the season for him on the PGA Tour, which pushed him to second place just behind Scheffler in the FedEx Cup standings.
After starting the day seven shots ahead, Burns recorded 65, five under par, to get to 271, nine under par. Scheffler, who held at least part of the lead after each of the first three rounds, posted 72 (+2) after two bogeys, with no birdies. The number 1 had to rescue the pair after going to the bunker on the 18th to go to the tiebreaker.
Burns and Scheffler repeated the 18th hole, par 4, to determine the winner. Kicked the burns from the rough and achieved a birdie that ended up giving him the win. Scheffler didn’t match him with a long birdie putt.
“I played a great round of golf today and caddy Travis Perkins did a great job all day,” Burns said. “I’m just proud of the way we finished. Making that putt is just icing on the cake,” he celebrated.
Burns25, also won the Sanderson Farms Championship in October and the Valspar Championship in March this season. His seven-shot recovery equaled the most a player has achieved to win at Colonial Country Club. It also denied Scheffler what was his fifth win in the last ten tournaments.
Brandon Todd he was third with 272 (-8). Davis-Riley finished with 69, tied for fourth with 7 under Scott Stallings (72) at Tony Finau (67). Kevin Na (69), jordan spieth (70), Chilean Pabula Pereira (71), the Australian Cam Davis (72) at patrick tambo (72) who tied for seventh in five under par.
