Frances Tiafoe starred in the big surprise of the quarterfinal matchday of the Dallas tournament after being defeated by his compatriot Marcos Giron 6-1 and 6-4.
Giron’s victory in the quarterfinals – his 12th victory over a top-20 opponent – freed up his compatriot’s schedule. The 30-year-old, who is still looking for his first ATP Tour title, he lost to Tiafoe 6-2, 6-2 in Indian Wells almost a year ago.
For his part, Ben Shelton came back to defeat Jordan Thompson 6-7 (2), 6-4, 6-4, and the third-seeded American will face his compatriot Tommy Paul in the semifinals. Paul, seeded second, defeated German Dominik Koepfer 7-5, 6-3.
Giron will face Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, the fourth seed who reached the semifinals without playing a full match.. In his first match of the tournament, Mannarino defeated James Duckworth when the Australian retired injured, with Mannarino winning 6-2, 3-1.
