Sebastien Haller He returned to Borussia Dortmund injured after handing the Africa Cup to the Ivory Coast on Sunday with his goal in the last moments of the final against Nigeria (2-1). In particular, the French-born forward suffered a sprained ankle and will be out for several weeks, as the German club announced today.
Haller underwent medical examinations this Friday in Dortmund which revealed a return of a sprained right ankle which he suffered against Mainz in a Bundesliga match played on December 19.
He was injured in the Africa Cup
In fact, Haller hasn’t played for Dortmund since. His participation in the Africa Cup was in jeopardy and, after losing in the group stage, reappeared on January 29 entering the 73rd minute of the Africa Cup round of 16 match against Senegal.
In the quarterfinals he played the entire second half against Mali and in the semifinals, already a starter, scored only one in the match against DR Congo which qualified Ivory Coast for the grand final. In the decisive match he also joined the starting eleven and decided his goal in the 81st minute.
Only two Cup goals with Dortmund
Wondering since the beginning of the season Haller is yet to score for Dortmund neither in the Bundesliga nor the Champions League. He scored twice in the first of the DFB Pokal against a very modest Schott Mainz (1-6).
Haller performed an impressive improvement exercise afterward overcome a malignant testicular tumor in July 2022 just days after signing for Dortmund. After undergoing chemotherapy treatment and overcoming the disease, he returned to play in February 2023.
Dortmund are fourth in the Bundesliga and visit Wolfsburg tomorrow before visiting PSV on Tuesday in the round of 16 (first leg) of the Champions League.
