Liverpool is demanding an apology from the French government

Date:

The president of Liverpool, Tom Wernerhas apologized to the French sports minister after he said that fans of the fake ticket and the club’s control over its supporters were responsible for the problem that ruined the final of Champions League of Saturday.

The match at the Stade de France, where Real Madrid won 1-0, was delayed by more than half an hour after police tried to stop people trying to go to the ground. French riot police fired tear gas at several fans, including children.

On Monday, sports minister Amelie Oudea-Castera said the first problems were caused by Liverpool fans who did not have valid tickets and accused the club of letting supporters “take to the streets”. French Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin added that there is “massive (ticket) fraud on an industrial scale.”

Werner responded Monday with a letter to Oudea-Castera, describing his comments as “irresponsible, unprofessional and completely disrespectful” to affected fans.

“The UEFA Champions League final must have been one of the greatest spectacles in world sport and instead it has been one of the worst security crashes in recent memory,” Werner quoted the Liverpool Echo statement as saying.

“On behalf of all the fans who experienced this nightmare, I apologize and guarantee that the French and UEFA authorities allow an independent and transparent investigation to take place.”

UEFA has ordered an independent investigation into the incident, while Oudea-Castera said it would make a report within 10 days. In an interview on Liverpool’s website, chief executive Billy Hogan said they were also reviewing the legal options available to them on behalf of their supporters.
