Last Tuesday, the Government authorized the Circuits de Catalunya to negotiate the lease of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya to the Fira Internacional de Barcelona. The purpose of this proposal, as pointed out by La Vanguardia, is to improve management and enable the facilities to hold conferences, concerts and fairs in addition to the usual sporting events.
The Generalitat, the largest shareholder of the Circuit, accepts that the concession is for a maximum of 20 years and the agreement should be finalized in 2024. The income from the Montmeló track is mainly concentrated in F1 and MotoGP Grand Prix and is now in a deep remodeling to improve the show and other aspects. For example, a building will be placed in the middle of the back straight and the digitalization will be strengthened to become the place for new events.
This move will also help the Circuit not lose its place on the F1 calendar, whose contract expires in 2026 and whose continuation is in doubt due to the arrival of Madrid in the ‘Grand Circus’. The Fira de Barcelona, an institution that is mainly used to attract and maintain events, acts in favor of maintaining the GP.
After all, this is a movement not far from what was done in Madrid, where Ifema acts as the promoter of the GP, which will be held for the first time in two seasons.
