Formula 1 is on hold these days with the Saudi Arabia GP disputealthough in recent times worrying news has rocked the paddock.
It is about the health of Heikki Kovalainen, who had to undergo heart surgery after the aneurysm was detected ascending aorta, a bulge in the artery closest to the heart.
“I was recently diagnosed with an ascending aortic aneurysm during a medical checkup. and they told me I can’t participate in rallies because of the increased risk of aortic rupture,” the driver said in a statement released by the AICELLO team, where he competes in the Japanese Rally Championship.
“I have no symptoms and I feel fine, but we are working on a plan to solve this problem. Open heart surgery is our best solution at this time and we are preparing for it. “I hope to have surgery and recover soon,” he added.
“My goal is, of course, to return to the Japanese Rally Championship with Rally Team AICELLO. I was scheduled to participate in rallies until the end of January, but after careful consideration with my doctors I decided to try to resolve it now. I’m sorry to all our teammates and fans for this problem, and thank you very much for all the encouragement and support in this matter,” concluded the former Formula 1 driver.
Heikki Kovalainen and Fernando Alonso were Renault teammates in 2006when the Asturian won his second world champion title, with the Finn as test driver.
