Cantero holds the top 3, Hildalgo joins and Manassero returns on his own terms

Date:

The Italian Matteo Manassero, with -11 (61 strokes) which is the best card of his career and gives him a cumulative score of 129 (-15), is the new leader of the Jonsson Workwear Open, by DP World Tour and played at the Glendower Golf Club in Edenvale (South Africa), with Spaniards Iván Cantero and Ángel Hidalgo, incredibly, just two strokes from the head in third place.

The second day of the South African tournament, this last season of the International Swing, with good weather conditions, saw the return to prominence of a Manassero who destroyed the field, with two eagles and seven birdies. The “best round” he ever had in his life, as the Italian himself said after his round.

Manassero, a 30-year-old from Veronese who already has five victories as a professional (four on the European Tour) but has not won a trophy for almost ten years and ten months. In his days he won the prestigious British PGA at Wentworth and was looking for a figure but then he disappeared.

Now he is in the lead, but only one stroke ahead of South African Oliver Bekker, who repeated the 65 from his first round. Just two strokes away from Manassero, who has 131 and has chosen all, are the Spaniards Iván Cantero, who started the second round as co-leader and signed the second card with 67 strokes (-5), and Ángel Hidalgo, who delivered a 64 (eight birdies), and Englishman Tom McKibbin, who also had a 64.

Cantero’s round (he started on hole 10, with two eagles and four birdies) could have been better, as he made his third bogey of the day on his penultimate hole which dropped him one spot.

Among other Spaniards, it is worth highlighting that Santiago Tarrió (-7) and Nacho Elvira (-6) will play at the weekend.
