Chelsea’s former assistant Luca Gotti (56) was named the new coach of Lecce this Wednesday, two days after Roberto D’Aversa was fired for appearing to headbutt an opposing player. Gotti was Maurizio Sarri’s assistant at Chelsea in 2018-19 and most recently head coach of Udinese and Spezia.
Lecce announced that Gotti has signed a contract until the end of the season which will be extended if the southern team avoids relegation. D’Aversa lost control late in Sunday’s 1-0 home loss to Hellas Verona. Verona striker Thomas Henry was arguing with Lecce defender Marin Pongracic late in the match when D’Aversa came over to intervene, but ended up knocking Henry out with a spectacular headbutt in front of one of the match official
In addition to the dismissal, D’Aversa received a four-game ban that he must serve if he is hired by another club. Lecce sit one point above the relegation zone after an impressive start to the season which saw them remain unbeaten after five games. Gotti’s debut will take place on Saturday against last place Salernitana.
