The Atalanta advanced to the quarterfinals of the European League after coming back from 0-1 down against Sporting Club of Portugaleliminated with two goals in the second half of Ademola Lookman and Gianluca Scamacca.
The 1-1 score in the first leg left the tie wide open for both teams and the Italian team took the lead in one of the most even ties of the round of 16.
Atalanta will play in the European quarterfinals for the fifth time in its history. They have only overcome that barrier once, in the 1987/88 Cup Winners’ Cup, when they were held out in the semi-finals by Mechelen. That was his ceiling and now he would have a chance to match it.
However, he suffered to achieve his goal. He had to overcome a goal from Pedro Gonçalves, who opened the scoring in the first half to score his third goal of the season in the Europa League.
However, a good start to the second half was enough to secure the victory. Lookman and Scamacca appeared to score two goals for the Italian team and they were enough to secure a hard-fought ticket to the quarterfinals: Paulinho, at the buzzer, almost equalised. However, goalkeeper Juan Musso, with an excellent intervention, avoided extra time and Atalanta were in the next draw.
