West Ham fans will not leave the London Stadium happy after seeing Aston Villa scrape a point in a match in one of the biggest controversies of the entire season.
It happened at the last minute. Between Soucek and Bowen they scored in the 96th minute what appeared to be the winning goal, but ultimately did not get on the scoreboard. After four minutes of analysis, and with several replays in which it was not possible to see exactly what really happened, although it was clear, it was decided not to allow the goal of West Ham, who were left stunned, by the hand of Czech.
The ‘hammers’ were better in the first half. Although Areola started by stopping a shot from Watkins, the truth is that Moyes’ team gradually became more comfortable on the pitch. In fact, if the former did not come first, it was because Soucek deflected a shot from Pacheta that was going in, but after half an hour it was Antonio who did it with a header (29′).
Aston Villa were offside until the second half, although before they could react West Ham had their first goal disallowed for handball, in this case also by Antonio from a corner kick. From there, Unai Emery’s team stepped up, pushed by the arrival of Diaby, Cash and Zaniolo, keys to finding a tie. In fact, the winger connected in a personal game with the Italian who, with the first touch, managed to turn the tables (79′).
At that point, the tension between West Ham and Aston Villa rose sharply. Several attacks, minutes of tension and the game was open, until the 94th minute when controversial action took place due to Soucek’s alleged handball which was corrected by VAR even though there was no very clear replay.
