Unusual but true. English women’s football experienced a truly surreal episode that made headlines in the country’s media and shocked everyone. It happened in a game Women Super League (WSL), the English First Division, in between Chelsea and Arsenal, a match played at Stamford Bridge that attracted 32,970 fans.
The rivalry was delayed for half an hour as the entire public waited for this top-flight encounter with the biggest stars of the moment. The truth is that Arsenal can’t take the field for one simple reason: the players don’t have the right socks. The club gave them white socks, the same color as the rival team, so they couldn’t jump on the field.
So, the Gunner team had no choice but to find some socks for their players… in the official Chelsea store. There they bought black socks so that the color of the opposing team would not match.
The Gunner team should have worn red socks, but they showed up in white, just like the home team. He Daily Mail echoed the strange episode.
The truth goes further. And Chelsea wears Nike, while the ‘gunners’ are from Adidas, so they had to cover the brand symbol with adhesive tape because of the commitment to the brand that dresses them.
Reactions were immediate on social media. Arsenal legend Ian Wright was very critical via account X: “Shameful. Ridiculous,” said the former footballer. The path of criticism did not wait for a chapter that was called ‘shameful’ in various media.
