Almería achieved its first victory in LaLiga on Sunday. And he didn’t do it in any field but in a difficult place, against UD Las Palmas and in the stadium of Gran Canaria.
Pepe Mel, the new ‘capo’ of the Almería bench, took stock of his early days at the helm of the bottom team. He acknowledges the importance of the initial success but warns that there is more to do.
“Unfortunately for all of us, what we did in Las Palmas was a drop of water in the desert, that’s all. It’s worth it for our self-esteem, for the people, for the club, because of the way we approach things, but we have to continue,” he said in the club’s radio statements. Next, a new challenge is presented: “We have to win in our stadium, this is a new challenge. People need to feel that the referee has blown the end of the game and their team has won. That feeling is what all professionals strive for. “There are many things to try to move forward.”
Pepe Melone of the veteran coaches in the top category and with many years behind him in the profession, both as a footballer and later as a coach, recognizes that he now measures himself against the technicians he taught years ago.
“Football tells you that you are getting older because there are a lot of my former players who are coaches, like Míchel at Girona, who was my captain at Rayo four years. I see so many footballers playing that I get rid of, like Ceballos, Fabián, Lucas Pérez, Fede Valverde himself who debuted in the Primera with me when he was 18 years old and is now in Madrid doing well, Peter, etc. These are experiences that a person has. In football you have to stay positive,” explained the new Almería coach.
