It took very little time Carlos Sainz showing that Ferrari is taking a very risky step by removing an important asset such as the Spanish driver. When he arrived at Maranello, many doubted that he would be able to fight head-to-head against Leclerc and only in the first half of 2022 the Monegasque could be said to be superior. The role of the squire was short-lived if it really existed at all.. In fact, we must not forget that in the first year, at the same time as Charles, it was Charles who came first. And last year the Madrid native was the only driver capable of beating the Red Bulls.
Despite the umpteenth demonstration that he could compete head-to-head against anyone, Ferrari chose not to renew him and signed Hamilton for 2025. No one doubts the quality of the seven-time world champion but, on the other hand, there are doubts
too much of the talent combined with perseverance that elevated Sainz to the best on the grid.
To give a bit of context, the last three times Ferrari managed to raise the flag at the Maranello factory was thanks to Sainz’s role. To regain Leclerc’s last victory you have to go to the Austrian Grand Prix in 2022. From then on the only winner in a non-Red Bull car and the only one capable of beating Verstappen in the last 21 races is Carlos again. And in 2024 he is seven points behind Charles with fewer races.
At Ferrari they looked the other way
Asked about Sainz’s level and if there were any regrets, Fred Vasseur, Team Principal of the Scuderia, did not want to enter the tests. “I will not talk about it next year. We made an agreement with Carlos a few weeks ago to just focus on the championship and not talk about the future. There are twenty more races, which are twenty chances to win. We have to focus on that,” said the Italian boss.
Time will tell if Ferrari is paying dearly for not valuing Sainz’s work properly, but there is no doubt that teams will now fight to convince the Spaniard to join their project. They have been seen in all colors and every time they outdo themselves by silencing quick criticism.. You don’t have to prove anything. You just have to fight for the title where you are given the chance.
