The German Sebastian Vettelfour times world champion Formula 1has successfully tested the Porsche 963 in the circuit Motorland Aragón in Alcañiz (Teruel) in a day where he completed 118 laps for a total of 581 kilometers in two double stops.
For Vettel this was the first track test with the team’s hybrid prototype Porsche Penske Motorsport in accordance with the regulations of the LMDh and that will engage in 24 Hours of Le Mans on June 15 and 16 where he used the longest route option on the circuit with 5,345 meters per turn.
The German’s previous steps before arriving in Aragon were on March 14 when he visited the FIA WEC team at the facilities of Porsche Penske Motorsport in Mannheim. A day later, he completed an extensive simulator session at the Porsche Motorsport Center in Flacht and familiarized himself with the special features and complex controls of the Le Mans racing car.
On March 21, he completed the first familiar kilometers in the Porsche 963 on the internal test circuit of the Weissach Development Center.
In Aragon, with dry weather, with temperatures on the asphalt between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius and between 10 and 13 degrees of fresh air, the champion Heppenheim finished on the Aragonese asphalt almost twice as much as the Grand Prix in Aragon.
Vettel recalled that he closely followed other motorsport disciplines and knew many drivers who actively participated in the WEC and Le Mans and “Porsche gave me the opportunity to test a hypercar with the current 963.”
“After the seat adjustment, the simulator session and the launch in Weissach, I already had a good feeling. It was definitely fun driving the Porsche 963 here in Aragon,” he stated.
The first thing he did was to get used to everything and find his own rhythm in a car where “the driving experience is different” due to the fact that the cabin is closed and because of its greater weight and the wheels.
Vettel thanked the official drivers of the Porsche team for the various explanations they gave him about this car, which was new to him, both what was special and what he had to get used to. “All of that was easy for me.”
