Wilson Furr finished a great day to score a 64 (-6) and tie Taylor Moore leading the Texas Children’s Houston Open after the first round.
Furr, a PGA Tour rookie and world No. 278, began his round on the back nine before warming up on the front nine. After a birdie on the 3rd hole, he stepped off the fairway on the 5th hole for a 2-eagle and ended his round with a birdie-birdie, including his long putt on the par-3 9th hole.
Furr, 25, has made just one cut in his first eight starts on the circuit.
Scottie Scheffler, world number 1, started at a -5. The winner of the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship, he is tied for third place with Davis Riley and Joe Highsmith.
Scheffler played through neck pain in The Players to win. This week he doesn’t have KT tape on his neck.
“The neck feels better, the body feels better,” Scheffler said. “Like I said, the bye week was good for me to rest and rehab. I took a couple more days off than normal last week, so it was a good recovery time.”
Beau Hossler, Argentina’s Alejandro Tosti, England’s Aaron Rai and Canada’s Mackenzie Hughes and Adam Svensson tied for sixth at 4-under 66.
Tony Finau, champion the last time he played the Houston Open (November 2022), opened with a 1-under 69.
Fourth-placed Wyndham Clark, the second-best player in the field behind Scheffler, said he hurt a muscle in his back earlier in the week, but is working through it. He shot an even par 70 to start the week.
