UEFA has only made public the Regulations of the European competitions for the next season, to which MD had access and to which they present news about the first and second continental competitions: the Champions League and the European League. Both are launching a new format for the 2024-2025 season.
And the main novelty is in article 18 of the same, where it refers to the equality of points in the first stage of the league. Until now, if two teams tied in the group stage, a direct confrontation between the two was considered. Something changed for the next 2024-2027 cycle required by the new league to be launched by the same competition. Thus, if two or more teams are tied on points at the end of matches in the league stage, the following criteria will be applied and in the following order, to determine their classification:
1.- Greater goal difference in the league stage
2.- Highest number of goals scored in the league stage
3.- Highest number of goals scored away from home in the league stage
4.- Maximum number of victories in the league stage
5.- Highest number of away wins in the league stage
6.- Greater number of points scored by rivals in the league stage
7.- Greater collective goal difference of rivals in the league stage
8.- Maximum number of goals scored by rivals in the league stage
9.- Lower the total disciplinary points based only on yellow and red cards received by players and team officials in all matches in the league stage (red card = 3 points, yellow card = 1 point, sending off for two yellow cards in one match = 3 points)
10.- Best club coefficient
Starting with the following qualifiers, and as it has been until now, the current system of the maximum number of goals is maintained, which is logically decided in 90 minutes, overtime or penalties. This tie-breaking standard will also apply to the new Europa League format.
Deadline dates to register for the Champions League
There is no change regarding the list of players who must register in the so-called lists A and B. And then there are registration periods. Especially the one established to inform the players that they will finally join the new phase of the league. The deadline to do so, as stated in article 31 of the same regulations, will be 24:00 on Tuesday, September 3. On that day both lists must be announced, which in the case of list A cannot exceed 25 players.
In the case of the Europa League, this date extends to Wednesday, September 4. The second date to be considered is in 2025. In this case, UEFA has set a limit to be able to register up to a maximum of three football players in February 6, 2025. The same date for the new Europa League format.
