The Northern Irishman Rory McIlroywho is fighting this week at August Masters With the possibility of winning the last ‘grand’ he needs to complete the ‘grand slam’ in his career, he assured this Tuesday that he knows he has the “potential” to achieve it and competing with “patience and discipline” will be important.
He did so at the press conference ahead of the Augusta Masters this week, shortly after the five-time champion of this tournament Tiger Woods assured that he had no doubt that McIlroy would achieve the ‘grand slam’ of his career.
“It’s a compliment, it’s nice to hear it from someone who in my opinion is the greatest ever. Does that mean it will pass? Obviously not, but I know I have the potential to do it. I have been a good player for the last two decades. But it’s good to hear it from Tiger’s microphones,” McIlroy said.
The Northern Irishman emphasized that one should not be rushed and that each hole should be approached with concentration and patience, sometimes playing more conservative shots.
“I don’t have to try to win from the first tee. It’s 72 holes, there are many different ways to win the tournament. I’m confident, but sometimes you have to take a more conservative path, be patient. You can be patient and have discipline, it’s something I’ve tried to learn over the years,” he said.
“It’s always about being grateful and feeling lucky to be able to compete here. “I have all the weapons to do it well, but getting those weapons out is the most important thing,” he added.
McIlroy, 34, won the US Open in 2011, the PGA Championship in 2012 and 2014 and the British Open in 2014.
