The bad news won’t stop Visma-Rent a Bike. The Dutch team is certainly the most affected of the peloton due to the recent crash that has affected some of its riders. Wout van Aert and Jonas Vingegaard, are out of contention due to two hard falls in Across Flanders and in Itzulia, respectively. The Belgian started as the leader of the ranks in the Giro d’Italia, but, after his accident, his participation in the Corsa Rosa is uncertain. Vingegaardfor his part, remains admitted to Txagorritxu Hospital after undergoing pneumothorax surgery and his presence in the Tour de France is in question.
As if that wasn’t enough, Visma-Lease a Bike announced in a statement another withdrawal for the first Grand Tour of the season. Wilco Kelderman, who in 2020 stood on the podium at the Giro d’Italia, will also miss the race. “Wilco has not fully recovered from his clavicle fracture and as his recovery has taken longer than expected, he will not start the Giro d’Italia,” the statement said.
Kelderman, who was supposed to go into the Giro with the leader’s role, broke his collarbone in the final stage of Paris-Nice. Your replacement is Koen Bouwman, meeting other team members preparing an appointment at a concentration at altitude. We have to see if Van Aert manages to recover in time and if not, how the team is restructured and what goals it presents itself at the starting line in Venaria Reale next Saturday, May 4.
