He Manchester United needs a new striker to help him overcome his scoring woes, according to the coach Erik ten Haag ahead of Saturday’s Premier League trip to Bournemouth. United have 45 goals this season, the lowest number among the top 10 teams in the standings.
Dane Rasmus Hojlund, 21, signed for around €90 million in August, has scored 13 goals in 34 appearances in all competitions. Anthony Martial has just two and has been injured since January. The team had the help of Argentine left winger Alejandro Garnacho, who scored nine goals in 41 games and Marcus Rashford, who scored 30 goals last season, had only eight in 38 games.
Ten Hag ruled out signing a striker in the January transfer market, citing financial fair play rules, but have now confirmed plans at the end of the season. “I think it would help. You need more options. You need double players in each position. In some positions we don’t have options this season (the forward position, the left-back position) and that has a negative effect on the result.”
“We are working in the background on plans with the scouts. The plan is ready but we have to execute it.” The coach added that he is open to ideas from the club’s new owners, hoping they will work together. “I am confident that the new owners will work as quickly as possible and bring in beautiful new structures and they will be able to do (the plans),” he added.
