Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti hailed his side’s fightback to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League with a heroic tie against Manchester City that was settled in a penalty shootout at the Etihad.
“You should never consider Real Madrid for dead because Real Madrid never dies,” said the Italian after sealing his place in the next round. Ancelotti revealed that Guardiola wished him luck at the end of the match. “He congratulated me on the classification, he wished us luck. He was a gentleman, as he has always been and as this club is, a gentlemen’s club,” he highlighted.
“We defended very well. We have seen this survival exercise many times at Real Madrid. For me, this is the only way to get out of this tie alive. This shield allows you to get a something that no one thought you had. In the shootout we were convinced that we could play an amazing game.
“We started well, we got ahead on the scoreboard and then we started to suffer, to fight, to sacrifice… We lowered the block a lot and City had more control, although they always had control. We defended very, very well,” said Carletto after the crash.
