Nahuel GuzmanMexican club goalkeeper Tigers of Nuevo León, suspended for 11 games and fined for pointing a laser at the goalkeeper Esteban Andrada in a tournament match last weekend, Liga MX announced Thursday. Guzmán, 38, is recovering from surgery on his right knee and was in the visiting team’s box at the BBVA stadium in Monterrey on Saturday in the first half when he pointed a laser in the direction of his fellow Argentine and Rayados’ starting goalkeeper.
Monterrey’s sports president, José Antonio Noriega, went to the venue and removed the laser in the first half of the match, which ended in a 3-3 tie. In addition to the suspension and fine, Guzmán must perform unspecified community service.
This is the first time in the history of Mexican soccer that a player has been sanctioned for pointing a laser at an opponent. The 2014 Apertura final between América and Tigres was temporarily halted after a fan pointed a laser at the players. Guzmán, who was included in Argentina’s squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia, will miss the rest of the Clausura tournament due to suspension.
