The Premier League did not give up and Arsenal showed that they did not suffer from the hangover from the defeat against Bayern Munich in a week to beat Wolverhampton (0-2) and regain the lead.
There was a certain state of alarm in the minutes before kick-off to see how the Gunners would fare, especially after City’s game against Chelsea. It has nothing to do with it. Arteta’s men played like they never said goodbye to the Champions League on Tuesday. Fresh, happy, confident and dynamic against a Wolves side who had no chance and certainly deserved to concede a few goals.
That is the pending issue for Arsenal, to realize the number of chances it is generating. We will have to go for a striker in the summer, there is talk of Ivan Toney, but for now the Londoners are doing with what they have and how they can. This time, Gabriel Jesus played up top and Havertz at the back in a duel dominated from start to finish, very quick combinations were drawn but where, again, they lacked bite in the final metres.
Furthermore, on so many occasions, and as has been the case before, in the one Wolverhampton had they were almost paid. A save by Raya and the stick prevented Gomes from catching up with his team, but thankfully it was the only scare for the Gunners, who managed to snap their losing streak.
A supporting actor like Trossard gave peace of mind. The Belgian, who has excelled in his role this season, showed that he is one of the top goalscorers by hitting him first with his nail and scoring a great goal for the whole squad before the break (45′ ). But not following that, the game worked again, with Arsenal doing a lot and finishing badly.
Arteta’s team hesitated for a few minutes. It was between the 70′ and 80′ when Wolves had their best moments on the ball and the Spanish coach understood this, bringing on Thomas Partey to control the situation in midfield. Total victory, as Arsenal were never in danger again, and they also found the second goal in stoppage time, the work of Odegaard (95′), to seal a crucial victory.
