The Ethiopian Chala Regasa won the 41st edition of the Vienna Marathon this Sundayrun all day but with temperatures below ten degrees, with a time of 2:06:35 hoursahead of three Kenyan athletes.
Second, with a time of 02:10:42, was Bernard Muia, ahead of Albert Kangogowith a time of 02:10:44, Leonard Barsoton, with 02:10:52, while Mexican Juan Pacheco was sixth, with a time of 02:11:42.
Regasa’s resounding victory, whose time was 1:27 minutes above the marathon record (Samwel Mailu last year), was the first by an Ethiopian runner since Sisay Lemma in 2015.
The women’s race was won by Nazret Weldu of Eritrea with a time of 02:24:08.ahead of Kenyans Faith Chepkoech (02:26:22) and Rebbeca Tanui (02:26:53), while fourth was Peruvian Jovana De La Cruz, with a time of 02:27:54, and Colombian Leydy Romero finished the race in seventh place, with a time of 02:30:37.
According to the organizers, approximately 42,000 runners from more than 100 countries around the world will participate in the Vienna Marathon 2024.
The two winners won a prize of 15,000 euros each (about $16,000) for their respective achievements.
