Euro 2024: Rangnick wants to be the new Otto Rehhagel

“I want to make history with Austria. “We want to achieve something that has never happened before,” he stated just two years ago. Ralf Rangnick (65), who was in no doubt about his ambitious goals at the start of his time as Austria’s new coach. The German could achieve something historic at Euro 2024 this summer in his home country, but there is already at least one case of someone who has done something remarkable, like him, an outsider and managed a small team. In 2004, a German coach like him led ‘Cinderella’ Greece to win the European Championship in Portugal: Otto Rehhagel. This is perhaps the most unexpected title in history. A goal in the final by Angelos Charisteas surprised everyone, certainly including Rehhagel himself. Luis Figo, Cristiano Ronaldo and company, who brought together the two golden generations of Portuguese football, were unable to topple the ‘bus’ that the Hellenes built in front of their place.
