“Thank you to everyone who makes this event possible, the best tournament in the world. It is very difficult to describe the feelings I have. It means a lot to be competitive here again,” said the Spaniard after winning Roland Garros again and leaving the door open for his return next year.

Once again the Spanish national anthem was played by Philippe Chatrier and Rafa Nadal lifted his eyes to the skies of Paris with the Musketeers Cup, which he won for the fourteenth time in 18 editions. The atmosphere was filled with anticipation as to whether the man with the most Grand Slam titles in tennis history would say goodbye to the French capital for good, but the afternoon’s applause took him as he left the door open for his return in 2023.

“I don’t know what will happen in the future, but I’ll keep trying,” he assured, unleashing the enthusiasm of an audience that has surrendered to the Spaniards through exhibitions and unparalleled dominance in world sport. “It’s very difficult to describe the feelings I have. It means a lot to be competitive here again. Thank you, thank you to everyone,” he told the Roland Garros crowd in French. “It’s incredible to play here, it’s very beautiful,” he said.

“Thank you to everyone who makes this event possible, the best tournament in the world. The organisation, the director, the French Federation and everyone who works here. You make me feel at home,” he emphasized in his praise for a tournament that is incomprehensible without his figure.

He also had words of comfort and appreciation for Casper Ruud, who had no chance in the grand final after his phenomenal performance in the two weeks on clay in Paris: «Thank you to everyone. It is a great pleasure to play this match with you, I am very happy for you, your family and your team. I wish you the best in the future.”

Nadal also thanked the work and support of his team and his family, essential to enable the fourteenth win at Roland Garros. “All this would not be possible without you, thank you so much for everything,” he said.

“The worst moment I had after the game with Moutet, I couldn’t walk. Luckily my doctor was here and that allowed me to play infiltrated,” he revealed already at the press conference after the game. “I can’t keep competing with my foot asleep, a solution has to be found. I would like continue to compete, so next week I’m going to talk to different doctors and consider different options,” he added regarding his current physical condition and the future of his career.
