The Olympic high jump champion in Tokyo 2020, Gianmarco Tamberiand the foil champion at London 2012, Arianna Errigowill be Italian flag bearers for the next Olympic Games in Paris 2024.
The president of the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI), Giovanni Malagoit was officially proposed this morning and received unanimous support from the CONI Council.
Tamberi and Errigo will receive the Italian flag from the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, in a ceremony to be held on June 13 with the flag bearers of the Italian Paralympic Committee.
“Paris 2024 standard bearer alongside Gianmarco Tamberi! My heart burst with joy! You know when you don’t believe even when they told you? Thank you Giovanni and thank you to the whole CONI council for believing in me. ‘Gimbo ‘ It will be an honor to parade alongside you,” Errigo said on his social networks.
The fencer, who specializes in foil, also won silver in London 2012 in individual foil, bronze in team foil in Tokyo 2020 and is world champion up to 10 times.
For his part, Tamberi, current world and European champion in the high jump, said he was living “a dream.”
“Today I could not receive better news, representing the Italian expedition at the Paris 2024 Games fills me with pride,” he published on his official Instagram account.
“I hope with all my heart that I can be worthy of this role for Italy and I promise that I will do everything possible. My sincere thanks to President Giovanni Malagò, the CONI Council and the National Council , for the trust they have given me and for returning to the role of standard bearer in Italian athletics after 36 long years, I am living a dream,” he added.
“I recognize that I have not always managed to represent each and every Italian over the years. I have always given everything for sport, putting it before everything else in my life,” he said.
