Katir and Mariano suffer in Rabat

Date:

The man from Muleño finished seventh in the 1,500m after falling in the last 200m and the man from Cuevas de Reyllo was 11th in the 800m

Mohamed Katir and Mariano García arrived in Rabat (Morocco) with the idea to shine at an international level event and send a message to their rivals ahead of the Spanish Championship to be held in Nerja (Málaga) between June 24 and 26. But the two Murcian athletes suffered in their respective tests and will have to improve for the next races. This summer there is a World Cup in July and a European Championship in August and both want to compete for a medal in both events.

For example, Katir from Muleño was far from his best level in the fourth Diamond League game of the year at a distance of 1,500 meters. He stayed with the leaders for much of the race, but sank in the final 200 meters and eventually crossed the finish line seventh, with a discrete time of 3:34.95. The victory was won by the Briton Jake Wightman, with 3:32.62. Katir came after Heyward, also British, Sadiki from Morocco, Grethen from Luxembourg, Debjani from Belgium and Zeleke from Ethiopia.

Mariano García, for his part, could only finish 11th in the 800. The Cuevas de Reyllo rider never had a chance to be among the best in Rabat, finishing with a time of 1:48.48 and crossing the finish line last. The victory went to Kenyan Emmanuel Wanyonyi (1:45.47), followed by Nijel Amos, from Botswana (1:45.66) and Frenchman Gabriel Tual (1:45.71).

In other cases, Galician Ana Peleteiro, 26, announced yesterday that she is three months pregnant and therefore will not compete until 2023. Olympic bronze in the triple jump, Peleteiro is focused on seeking gold in Paris 2024.
